PARENTS HAVE CHOICES!!
12 THINGS I CAN DO AS A PARENT TO MAKE MY HOME AND COMMUNITY WORK BETTER
When it comes to making things better in your home and community, remember: you have choices about what you do, how you handle it, and what you say. Try to make better and better choices for you, your family, and your neighbors!
Treat my child as I would want others to treat my child.
Praise my child and remind him/her of strong points I see. Praise good behavior, no matter how small.
Be more patient with my child, even though it is hard and I might not be thanked for it.
APOLOGIZE to my child when I do something wrong. He/she will respect me and not lose self-esteem.
Have clear rules, appropriate for MY child; make sure my child knows exactly what I expect, and exactly what will happen if the rules are not followed. Be sure to follow through!
Read to my child, and have my child read to me, or to another family member or friend.
Involve my child in music, art, crafts, especially with other children.
Give my child a chance to help and care for others.
Offer to help a friend or neighbor, to make their burden a little lighter. I will feel better!
Arrange a meeting of some parents in my child’s class or neighborhood and share ideas about parenting and school.
Talk to my child’s teacher or visit my child’s classroom a couple of times every month.
I WILL PICK SOMETHING ABOUT MY PARENTING AND MY COMMUNITY THAT I AM NOT HAPPY WITH AND WORK TO IMPROVE IT. WORKING TO IMPROVE WHAT I CARE ABOUT IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS I CAN DO.
